5. Explain why Kemerovo is the heart of Kuzbass. 7

Kemerovo

Kemerovo is the capital of Kuzbass, its most important residential, industrial, cultural and educational centre. Kemerovo is a young city. It was founded a little more than 20 years ago, on the banks of the river Tom. The little village Sheglovka by name has changed beyond recognition. Today Kemerovo is a beautiful, modern city with a population of nearly a million residents. You can see many old and modern buildings, wide and straight streets, big and small squares, green parks.

Kemerovo is famous for its coal mines, chemical and machine-building plants, factories.

Kemerovo is also a town of students. There are 7 higher educational institutions in it: the State University, the Polytechnical University, the Medical Academy, the Academy of Art and Culture, the Technological Institute of Food Industry, the Higher Military School for, the University of Commerce and Trade.

Besides, Kemerovo is a cultural center. The Kemerovites and visitors can go to the Drama of Musical Comedy Theatre, the Concert Hall, the Puppet Show, the Circus, the Theatre for the Young, as well as its museums, picture gallery, cinemas.

The Kemerovites are proud of their native city and make it more and more beautiful from year to year.
They say, East or West, home is best. Nearly every person takes native city dear to the heart. My city is really remarkable nowadays. Today it is a modern Siberian center with wide streets and prospects. The central , Vesennyaya Street is a splendid sight in spring, with blossing lilac bushes and the square in memory of Volkov, the founder of coal in this region, with parks and alleys.

Summing it up, I can honestly say that I’m proud of my native town Kemerovo and I think it’s the best place to live in.

Are you a theatre-goer? Explain your point of view.
Although I’m not a theatre-goer, I never miss a chance to see a good play. There are many theatres in Kemerovo. I visited some of them: Drama Theatre and the Theatre for the Young and Children. I enjoyed visiting them very much!
Once when I was in Moscow my parents proposed me to visit the Bolshoi Theatre. It is always very difficult to find tickets for really good performances. It’s next to impossible to get tickets to the Bolshoi Theatre on a Sunday night.
But we were lucky to get tickets to the Bolshoi Theatre. The “Swan Lake” was on.
We bought tickets in the box-office of the theatre. I knew that the best and the most expensive seats were in the stalls and the dress-circle. The seats in the upper circle pit and gallery were cheaper. The seats in the stalls were sold out. I took box number six in the dress-circle. It was very well placed and we could have a good view of the stage.
The Bolshoi Theatre is a magnificent building. We arrived at the theatre ahead of time. I hate coming at the last moment. Having produced our tickets, we passed through the entrance halland went to the cloak room, where we left our hats and coats. The usher led us to our seats.
At last the curtain went up. The scenery was beautifully set up. The Bolshoi Theatre is famous for its excellent performances. Its productions are always a success and have a very long run. We enjoyed the “Swan Lake”. Music and dances were perfect. The leading lady was marvellous. At the end of the acts the audience applauded the dancers. The theatre was ful. There was hardly any vacant place.
The “Swan Lake” made deep impression on me!

For more information about Passive Voice visit http://www.native-english.ru/grammar/voices

When was the work done?

Has the work been done?

The work was not done last week.

The work will not done tomorrow.

Active Voice

Tom delivers the mail.

Tom delivered the mail.

Tom will deliver the mail.

Passive Voice

The mail is delivered by Tom.

The mail was delivered by Tom.

The mail will be delivered by Tom.

I am invited to a party.

All observations were made by a team of famous scientists.

We were asked to come as early as possible.

Passive Voice

В английском языке имеется два залога: the Active Voice (действительный залог) и the Passive Voice (страдательный залог).

Topic № 11

“A hobby is a pleasant pastime”. Explain it.
Hobby is something you do when you have some spare time. This is your pastime or leisure. So many people – so many activities, they say, as people go in for different hobbies – fishing, hunting, collecting, travelling – what not!
A lot of people enjoy collecting coins, badges, stamps, souvenirs, butterflies. They are so proud of their collections and never stop talking of them.
Other prefer sports (indoors or outdoors – it depends on their tastes and weather). They spend long hours training or participating in various competitions. They believe, participation is more important than winning a victory.
Or they are sport fans and shout for their favourites. Many people find nothing so good As reading, they can’t help reading a novel or a detective story, or a favourite essay; tastes differ in fact.
Having a pet at home is not eccentric either.
And, of course, there are people who are fond of travelling. It’s a pleasant and useful hobby, isn’t it? Don’t you think that travelling enlarges your outlook, develops your skills, fills your leisure and enriches your experience.
Naturally, some hobbies need money spendings and efforts. And what about visiting friends? It isn’t expensive at all. But it is really pleasant.
Or listening to music. Or watching TV and videos. Some people are so fond and full of TV programmes, cartoons, trillers, soap-operas, they are calles “couch potatoes”. Of course, TV is a source of education and pleasure, not only a waste of time, but many young people prefer visiting theatres or cinemas, or visiting historic places.
You choose for your personal fun and profit. Are you an indoor or an outdoor type? Find out and enjoy your free time!
