New Zealand

New Zealand is an island country in the Southwest Pacific Ocean. It lies about 1 600 km southeast of Australia and about 10 500 km southwest of California. New Zealand belongs to a large island group called Polynesia. The country is situated on two main islands — the North Island and the South Island — and several dozen smaller islands. Most of the smaller islands are hundreds of kilometers from the main ones.

Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and Auckland is the largest city. English is the official language of New Zealand and is spoken throughout the country. Many native people speak their own language, Maori, in addition to English.

The country once belonged to the British empire. Today it is in independent member of the Commonwealth of Nations, an issociation of Britain and a number of its former colonies.

New Zealand is a constitutional monarchy. The British Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, is the monarch of New Zealand. She appoints a governor general to represent her, but the governor general has little power. The legislation, prime minister, and Cabinet run the national government.

Britain gave New Zealand a constitution in 1852, when it was a British colony. But through the years the New Zealand legislature has changed almost all its provisions. Today, the nation has no written constitution.

The first people who settled in New Zealand were a brown-skinned people called Maoris. They came from Polynesian islands located northeast of New Zealand. The country was discovered by Europeans in 1642, but they did not start to settle in the islands until the late 1700′s. Today, most New Zealanders are descendants of the early European settlers. Maoris make up about 12% of the country’s population.

New Zealand has one of the highest standard of living in the world. For many years, the economy of the country depended largely on agriculture. Today agriculture, manu- factoring, and service industries are all important to the economy. New Zealands economy depends on trade with many countries — Australia, Britain, Japan and the United States.

Canada is the second largest country in the world. Only Russia has a greater land area. Canada is situated in North America. Canada is slightly larger than the United States, but has only about a tenth as many people. About 28 million people live in Canada. About 80% of the population live within 320 km of the southern border. Much of the rest of Canada is uninhabited or thinly populated because of severe natural conditions.

Canada is a federation of 10 provinces and 2 territories;. Canada is an independent nation. But according to the Constitution Act of 1982 British Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is recognized as Queen of Canada. This symbolizes the country’s strong* ties to Britain. Canada was ruled by Britain completely until 1867, when Canada gained control of its domestic affairs. Britain governed Canada’s foreign affairs until 1931, when Canada gained full independence.

Canada’s people are varied. About 57% of all Canadians have some English ancestry and about 32% have some French ancestry. Both English and French are official languages of

the country. French Canadians, most of whom live in the provinces of Quebec, have kept the language and customs of their ancestors. Other large ethnic groups are German, Irish and Scottish people. Native people — American Indians and Eskimos — make up about 2% of the country’s population. 77% of Canada’s people live in cities or towns. Toronto and Montreal are the largest urban areas. Ottawa is the capital of the country.

Today, maintaining a sense of community is one of the major problems in Canada because of differences among the provinces and territories. Many Canadians in western and eastern parts of the country feel that the federal government does not pay enough attention to their problems. 80% of Quebec’s population are French Canadians. Many of them believe that their province should recieve a special recognition in the Canadian constitution.

There is nothing better and the most expensive in the world like Native Land. It gives us wings for flight, lights every our step. It is impossible to choose Native Land. It can be only loved or treated indifferently to.
Unfortunately some people don’t have the sense of patriotism and feeling of pride. How to develop this sense?
Recently I have been to the city at the bank of the river the Neva – Saint Petersburg. I visited a lot of excursions and knew the city’s history. I was very impressed by magnificent buildings of Cathedrals, ancient Palace`s towers and many other sights. Having seen all the sights I understood that exactly in such cities we could develop the spirit of Homeland and bring up to love the country.
After this journey my love to the Native Land became stronger and I’m ready to defend it and do good to it.

National symbol of Australia

The flag of Australia

7. Explain why Australia is the most extraordinary country to explore.

Australia, or the Commonwealth of Australia, as it is officially called, is situated on the island continent. It also occupies the Island of Tasmania and some minor islands round the coast of the continent.

It is a highly developed industrial-agrarian country. Its area is about 8 million km2. It is the only state in the world that occupies the territory of a whole continent.

The capital of Australia is Canberra, which became the capital only in 1927.

From 1787 to 1867 Australia was a place where criminals were sent from Britain. That is why the official language of Australia is English.

Almost one half of Australian territory is occupied by deserts and semideserts. For quite a long period of time it was thought to be useless for economic development. But it is rich in coal, iron ore, bauxites, uranium, lead and many other mineral resources.

For almost a century the production and export of sheep wool was the basis of the economy of the country. Now the most important industries are oil, chemical, ore mining, radioelectronics, and food industry. The country exports agricultural products and raw materials.

As for the nature, the commonest trees of Australia are the eucalyptus and the Australian acacia or mimosa, the national emblem of the country. Such unusual animals as a kangaroo or a koala-bear originate from Australia.

Australia is one of the most unusual and exotic countries of the world. A significant feature of modern Australian society is the representation of a lot of cultures drawn from many lands by its people.

Historically part of the British Empire and now a member of a Commonwealth of Nations, it is a relatively prosperous and independent nation.

6. Prove that Great Britain is rich in holidays.

There are fewer public holidays in Great Britain than in other European countries. They are: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, May Day, Spring Bank Holiday and Summer Bank Holiday. Public holidays in Britain are called bank holidays, because the banks as well as most of the offices and shops are closed.
The most popular holiday is Christmas. Every year the people of Norway give the city of London a present. It's a big Christmas tree and it stands in Trafalgar Square. Central streets are beautifully decorated.
Before Christmas, groups of singers go from house to house. They collect money for charity and sing carols, traditional Christmas songs. Many churches hold a carol service on the Sunday before Christmas.
The fun starts the night before, on the 24th of December. Traditionally this is the day when people decorate their trees. Children hang stockings at the end of their beds, hoping that Father Christmas will come down the chimney during the night and fill them with toys and sweets. Christmas is a family holiday. Relatives usually meet for the big Christmas dinner of turkey and Christmas pudding. And everyone gives and receives presents. The 26th of December, Boxing Day, is an extra holiday after Christmas Day. This is the time to visit friends and relatives or perhaps sit at home and watch football.
New Year's Day is less popular in Britain than Christmas. But in Scotland, Hogmanay is the biggest festival of the year.
Besides public holidays there are some special festivals in Great Britain. One of them takes place on the 5th of November. On that day, in 1605, Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill King James I. He didn't succeed. The King's men found the bomb, took Guy Fawkes to the Tower and cut off his head.
Since that day the British celebrate the 5th of November. They burn a dummy, made of straw and old clothes, on a bonfire and let off fireworks. This dummy is called a "guy" (like Guy Fawkes) and children can often be seen in the streets before the 5th of November saying, "Penny for the guy." If they collect enough money they can buy some fireworks.
There are also smaller, local festivals in Britain.

4. Prove that English is a truly global language of the world.

4. Prove that English is a truly global language of the world.
Learning a foreign language is not an easy thing. It is a long and slow process that takes a lot of time and efforts. Nowadays it is especially important to know foreign languages. Some people learn languages because they need them for their work, others travel abroad, for the third studying languages is a hobby. Everyone, who knows foreign languages can speak to people from other countries, read foreign writers in the original, which makes your outlook wider.

It is not surprising that many intellectuals and well-educated people are polyglots. I study English. Nowadays English has become the world’s most important language in politics, science, trade and cultural relations. Over 300 million people speak it as a mother tongue. The native speakers of English live in Great Britain, the United States of America, Australia and New Zealand. English is one of the official languages in the Irish Republic, Canada, the South Africa Republic. English is one of the official languages of the United Nations Organization and other political organizations. Half of the world’s scientific literature is in English. It is the language of computer technology.

To know English today is absolutely necessary for every educated person, for every good specialist. The English language is a wonderful language. It is the language of the great literature. It is the language of William Shakespeare, Jonathan Swift, Walter Scott, Charles Dickens. The great German poet Goethe once said, “He, who knows no foreign language, does not know his own one”. That is why in order to understand oneself and environment one has to study foreign languages.

Kemerovo is the capital of Kuzbass, its most important residential, industrial, cultural and educational centre. Kemerovo is a young city. It was founded a little more than 20 years ago, on the banks of the river Tom. The little village Sheglovka by name has changed beyond recognition. Today Kemerovo is a beautiful, modern city with a population of nearly a million residents. You can see many old and modern buildings, wide and straight streets, big and small squares, green parks.

Kemerovo is famous for its coal mines, chemical and machine-building plants, factories.

Kemerovo is also a town of students. There are 7 higher educational institutions in it: the State University, the Polytechnical University, the Medical Academy, the Academy of Art and Culture, the Technological Institute of Food Industry, the Higher Military School for, the University of Commerce and Trade.

Besides, Kemerovo is a cultural center. The Kemerovites and visitors can go to the Drama of Musical Comedy Theatre, the Concert Hall, the Puppet Show, the Circus, the Theatre for the Young, as well as its museums, picture gallery, cinemas.

The Kemerovites are proud of their native city and make it more and more beautiful from year to year.
They say, East or West, home is best. Nearly every person takes native city dear to the heart. My city is really remarkable nowadays. Today it is a modern Siberian center with wide streets and prospects. The central , Vesennyaya Street is a splendid sight in spring, with blossing lilac bushes and the square in memory of Volkov, the founder of coal in this region, with parks and alleys.

Summing it up, I can honestly say that I’m proud of my native town Kemerovo and I think it’s the best place to live in.

Are you a theatre-goer? Explain your point of view.
Although I’m not a theatre-goer, I never miss a chance to see a good play. There are many theatres in Kemerovo. I visited some of them: Drama Theatre and the Theatre for the Young and Children. I enjoyed visiting them very much!
Once when I was in Moscow my parents proposed me to visit the Bolshoi Theatre. It is always very difficult to find tickets for really good performances. It’s next to impossible to get tickets to the Bolshoi Theatre on a Sunday night.
But we were lucky to get tickets to the Bolshoi Theatre. The “Swan Lake” was on.
We bought tickets in the box-office of the theatre. I knew that the best and the most expensive seats were in the stalls and the dress-circle. The seats in the upper circle pit and gallery were cheaper. The seats in the stalls were sold out. I took box number six in the dress-circle. It was very well placed and we could have a good view of the stage.
The Bolshoi Theatre is a magnificent building. We arrived at the theatre ahead of time. I hate coming at the last moment. Having produced our tickets, we passed through the entrance halland went to the cloak room, where we left our hats and coats. The usher led us to our seats.
At last the curtain went up. The scenery was beautifully set up. The Bolshoi Theatre is famous for its excellent performances. Its productions are always a success and have a very long run. We enjoyed the “Swan Lake”. Music and dances were perfect. The leading lady was marvellous. At the end of the acts the audience applauded the dancers. The theatre was ful. There was hardly any vacant place.
The “Swan Lake” made deep impression on me!

For more information about Passive Voice visit http://www.native-english.ru/grammar/voices

When was the work done?

Has the work been done?

The work was not done last week.

The work will not done tomorrow.

Active Voice

Tom delivers the mail.

Tom delivered the mail.

Tom will deliver the mail.

Passive Voice

The mail is delivered by Tom.

The mail was delivered by Tom.

The mail will be delivered by Tom.

I am invited to a party.

All observations were made by a team of famous scientists.

We were asked to come as early as possible.

Passive Voice

В английском языке имеется два залога: the Active Voice (действительный залог) и the Passive Voice (страдательный залог).

Topic № 11

“A hobby is a pleasant pastime”. Explain it.
Hobby is something you do when you have some spare time. This is your pastime or leisure. So many people – so many activities, they say, as people go in for different hobbies – fishing, hunting, collecting, travelling – what not!
A lot of people enjoy collecting coins, badges, stamps, souvenirs, butterflies. They are so proud of their collections and never stop talking of them.
Other prefer sports (indoors or outdoors – it depends on their tastes and weather). They spend long hours training or participating in various competitions. They believe, participation is more important than winning a victory.
Or they are sport fans and shout for their favourites. Many people find nothing so good As reading, they can’t help reading a novel or a detective story, or a favourite essay; tastes differ in fact.
Having a pet at home is not eccentric either.
And, of course, there are people who are fond of travelling. It’s a pleasant and useful hobby, isn’t it? Don’t you think that travelling enlarges your outlook, develops your skills, fills your leisure and enriches your experience.
Naturally, some hobbies need money spendings and efforts. And what about visiting friends? It isn’t expensive at all. But it is really pleasant.
Or listening to music. Or watching TV and videos. Some people are so fond and full of TV programmes, cartoons, trillers, soap-operas, they are calles “couch potatoes”. Of course, TV is a source of education and pleasure, not only a waste of time, but many young people prefer visiting theatres or cinemas, or visiting historic places.
You choose for your personal fun and profit. Are you an indoor or an outdoor type? Find out and enjoy your free time!
